About Linda's Gardens

Linda Krsnak is following family tradition as a fourth generation farmer in Lake County not far from where her Great-Grandparents farmed in the Wentworth area after they moved to the Dakota Territory in 1883. Specialty farming piqued an interest in the family even back then, and an orchard was established on about three acres of land on the farm. As a child, Linda spent many hours picking apples from the trees in that orchard and fondly remembers her Grandma peeling and slicing apples for pies, applesauce, and apple butter. Today, Linda and her husband Jimmy, who is also a fourth generation South Dakota farmer, raise vegetables in their gardens and market them at the Sioux Empire Farmers Market in Sioux Falls, at the Madison Farmers Market, and also at their farm. Linda’s Gardens is a diverse and innovative endeavor that utilizes sustainable farming practices such as crop rotation and cover crops. Nearly three hundred different varieties of vegetables, herbs, fruits, berries, and flowers are raised at Linda’s Gardens each year. New techniques involving row covers, mulches, and trap crops are being utilized and tested on a continual basis. Three high tunnels are used extensively to extend the vegetable growing season in both spring and fall. The techniques applied by Linda and Jimmy have made Linda’s Gardens one of the leading vegetable producers in the state and are now serving as a source of information and education for local producers and government agencies.

Our very nice late fall and early winter allowed Jim to put up our fourth high tunnel, with the help of JacQui Kouf, our employee. On January 9,2012, we were able to get the plastic covering on the high tunnel in less than two hours, and Jim finished the roll up sides on Tuesday, just in time for winter to finally get to South Dakota on January 11th. We put out a call for volunteers the day on Sunday, and were very pleased to have a good sized crew show up to help. We're so thankful that we have friends and associates who are willing to give up their time to help us.
